This article contains spoilers from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Team-a-Mario saves the day, and all is right once again in the Mushroom Kingdom, even if they did have to rebuild Princess Peach's castle from scratch! So, what's next?

You may have seen the mid-credits scene within The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in theaters this weekend, featuring the return of a fan-favorite creepy star, now playing the role of jailer to newly transformed, skeletal Dry Bowser (Jack Black) and his baby boy, Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). But in case you didn't make it all the way through to the end credits, you might've missed the final post-credits scene that reveals another new Nintendo character, setting the stage for a potential third movie.

The main plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie involves Bowser Jr. kidnapping Princess Rosalia (Brie Larson), the long-separated sister of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Bowser Jr.'s goal is to siphon off Rosalia's magic to power a deadly world-ending canon atop his own personal Death Star, called Planet Bowser.

Peach and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) shoot off through space to rescue Rosalia, followed closely behind Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and, for a time, Daddy Bowser — until father is reunited with son. A raucous voyage through space leads to a final battle on Planet Bowser.

What is the Super Mario Galaxy Movie post-credits scene?

The earlier mid-credits scene sees Fox McCloud (Glen Powell), a character from Smash Bros., shoot off into the sky to return to his own universe, while the Bowsers are thrown into a proper prison. Lumalee, the nihilistic Luma from the first movie, makes her first appearance in the sequel here as their personal prison guard.

But there's a bigger reveal in the true post-credits scene that arrives at the very end of the end-credits scroll.

In that sequence, the pesky Ukiki returns. That thieving monkey, part of a breed of villains from the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island video game, pops back up to steal from a Whittle, a member of a species of tree spirits that also feature prominently in the games, particularly in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Someone is there to save the day.

A white-gloved fist bursts forth across the screen, knocking the Ukiki to the ground. The Whittle goes to thank the stranger, who turns out to be Princess Daisy.

Who is Princess Daisy?

For most casual players of any Mario or Mario-adjacent Nintendo game, Daisy may seem like the princess with the yellow dress, but she comes with her own background.

She's the ruler of Sarasaland, an empire comprising four kingdoms: the Muda Kingdom, the Easton Kingdom, the Birabuto Kingdom, and the Chai Kingdom. Daisy first appeared in the Game Boy game Super Mario Land (1989). Her home is invaded by the robot-piloting alien Tatanga, and she becomes the princess Mario must save.

Princess Daisy became a mainstay of Mario games, including Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment have not formally announced another sequel, but given the strong box-office projections for opening weekend and beyond, it wouldn't be a shocker for one to materialize.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, included a post-credits scene that revealed the arrival of Yoshi. That character then featured prominently in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, voiced by Donald Glover. It makes sense for Daisy to follow that same path.

There are many different avenues the movie franchise could go — even if critics would rather fart a Yoshi egg than watch another one of these. Perhaps the powers that be will move forward with a third film inspired by Super Mario Land, given Daisy's presence and the varied, vast terrain of Sarasaland. Perhaps there will be spinoffs. Will we get to see Fox McCloud's dimension? Some fans have already suggested an adaptation of Luigi's Mansion.

For now, we'll have to twirl the tips of our mustaches, deep in thought on all the theories.
