Chelsea Green has opened up about the scary experience that left her dealing with PTSD after she woke up during heart surgery. The WWE star revealed that her battle with her heart condition was more traumatic than many fans may have realized.

Speaking with TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Green discussed her years-long battle with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). This is a condition that can suddenly cause the heart to beat extremely fast. Green is now back in the ring and feeling much better. Nevertheless, she admitted that her surgery left her with nightmares and emotional trauma.

Chelsea Green’s heart surgery created a new kind of fear

Green had trouble attaining a proper diagnosis because doctors could never record one of her episodes while she was connected to an EKG. That finally changed during WrestleMania week when she was signing autographs at WWE World.

The condition had become scary for Green because she never knew when an episode might happen. One of her biggest fears was having an attack during a WWE match.

“That was the fear. I cannot be in the ring in front of 10 or 20,000 people and go into tachycardia and still finish a match. The risk of death is obviously huge,” Green said.

The surgery itself ended up being another frightening experience.

Green revealed that doctors intentionally woke her while she was still on the operating table. They needed to trigger another SVT episode to make sure the procedure had worked.

“When I came out of it, I had like weird PTSD of being in that surgery and being woken up while still on the table and having them still operate,” Green admitted.

“For the last hour of the surgery or with some people maybe the last 20 minutes, they wake you up. They strap you down, they wake you up, you’ve got everything still going through your veins up into your heart, and they flush your IV with a medication that makes your heart speed up. So that exact feeling that I would get at the height of my SVT is what I felt immediately,” she added.

Green said the experience eventually led to PTSD. She continued having nightmares about waking up during the procedure, even though her physical recovery went well.

“I did not know I had to wake up on the table and like go be operated on still. That’s very traumatizing,” Green said.

The SmackDown star also mentioned going to therapy for her mental health after waking up during the surgery took a toll on her.

“The waking up in surgery traumatized me more than I thought it would and more than I had expected it to. And so that was just something like I needed to talk through and mentally get over that because there’s a lot of nightmares that I have about it. Now we’re a couple months out. I’ve spoken about it. I’m in the ring consistently every Friday night on Smackdown. I feel good. I feel better than I ever did before. I’m not getting the tachycardia attacks the way I used to. So it’s a relief,” she added.

Despite everything she went through, Chelsea Green never seriously thought about retiring from wrestling. Her love for the business remained stronger than the fear surrounding her health.

She mentioned many injuries she has dealt with throughout her career, including broken bones and a broken nose, as proof that it would take a lot to convince her to walk away from wrestling.
